Venerable Lama Gedun Gyatso
The Ven. Lama Gedun Gyatso, was born in Markham/East Tibet. As a child he learnt with a Lama. At the age of eleven he joined Dechen Tenphel Ling Monastery where he studied Buddhist scriptures and received an education in rituals and Buddhist chants. Five years later he was sent to the main Sakya Monastery in Central Tibet. Under the guidance of the Abbot of Sakya he studied the Budhhist scriptures until he had to flee in 1959 from Tibet to India. He continued his studies over there. In 1969 he went to the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi, where he graduated with honours and received the degree of an Acharya (spiritual master), then joined the Sakya Centre in Rajpur as a teacher.
Upon the wish of H.H. Sakya Trizin he went to Switzerland in 1979 and became a member of the monks’ community at Rikon monastery, where he still lives today and gives teachings to Tibetans and interested western people. He was the executive resident lama of Sakya Kalden Ling Frankfurt, where he gave teachings and initiations.
