Lama Lopon Kunga Choedak

 

Ven. Lama Lopon Kunga Choedak is a permanent monk of Sakya Centre, Dehradun, the main monastery of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He joined Sakya Centre as a novice monk in year 1999 and completed his ritual studies in 2006. In 2008, he undertook full Buddhist monk ordination and enrolled in the Sakya Institute of Buddhist studies where he learned Buddhist philosophy. In 2016, he received his Kachupa degree (equivalent to Bachelor’s degree) after which he performed various Buddhist meditational deity retreats in 2017, a requirement to complete his spiritual training. In 2018, Ven. Lama Kunga Choedak Bhutia studied for his Master’s degree in advance Buddhist philosophy where he concurrently served as a tutor and revision teacher to philosophy students. He was awarded the Lopon degree in 2019.


Since graduation, Ven. Lama Kunga Choedak Bhutia has travelled on behalf of our monastery to Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Mongolia to teach Buddhism and perform rituals and blessings for the public. He was assigned to work in the Monlam Tibetan-English dictionary project for a year before being seconded to the Sakya Academy to teach Buddhist scriptures to the students there. He is a valuable member of our monastery.
